Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Shirley Robertson, Britain's 1996 Olympic representative in Europe, won the 1997 BTRYA Women's National Match Racing Cup Championship yesterday beating Cordelia Eglin, 2-0, in a best of three final at Queen Mary Club, West London. Robertson was unbeaten throughout the competition. Third was last year's runner-up Fiona Coates, of Maidenhead.

David Neale, in Serica, led the eight yachts into the finish of the Clipper `96 round the world race in Plymouth but the overall winner, despite losing his forestay 200 miles from the end, was Ras Turner in Ariel.

In New York the Knickerbocker Cup was delayed by light winds but saw Peter Gilmour and Peter Holmberg and Bertran Pace line up against Terry Hutchinson in the semi-finals.

Russell Coutts and his Team Magic steered Morning Glory to victory in the IMS division of the Maxi World Cup in Sardinia. Chris Dickson won overall in Sayonara with a race to spare.
