Harlequins have announced the signing of former Australia Test captain James Horwill.

The 29-year-old lock, who has won 58 caps, will move to Quins after next year's World Cup.

Confirmation of his move to Europe comes on the same day as his Wallabies team-mate Adam Ashley-Cooper was announced as joining French club Bordeaux-Begles next autumn.

Horwill has signed a three-year deal with Quins. He has played more than 100 times for Queensland Reds and captained them to the Super Rugby title in 2011.

Quins rugby director Conor O'Shea said: "I am delighted that we have attracted someone of James' standing in the game to play for us following the completion of the Rugby World Cup next year.

"James is known around the world not only for his uncompromising style of play but also for his strength of character.

"He will be an asset for us on the field and within the changing room."

Horwill added: "As hard as it will be to leave my team-mates, the staff and all my fans and friends in Queensland, I have been offered a fantastic opportunity with Harlequins to experience rugby in another part of the world - and this is right for me at this stage of my rugby career.

"I am completely committed to helping the Reds and to helping Australia achieve success in the World Cup - and then I will turn my attention to the next chapter of my life in rugby with Harlequins."
