Argentina beat Romania 43-8 in their World Cup Pool B match in Invercargill, scoring six tries.
The fly-half Santiago Fernandez and flanker Juan Manuel Leguizamon scored in the first 10 minutes and further tries from the prop Juan Figallo and full-back Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino took the Pumas out of sight; Ionel Cazan scored for Romania. The wing Juan Jose Imhoff and the back-rower Gonzalo Fessia scored second-half tries for Argentina, whose captain, the No8 Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe, said: "We were desperate to get a win, that was the only option for us. We got a lot of confidence from that match."
Argentina's next match, against Scotland in Wellington on Sunday, will be key to qualification for the quarter-finals. Yesterday the president of the Scottish Rugby Union, Ian McLauchlan, led a delegation to Christchurch, the city that was hit by an earthquake in February and subsequently lost its allocated World Cup matches. The Scots visited the AMI Stadium, which was badly damaged in the earthquake.
The Scotland captain, Alastair Kellock, said: "It's been great to be here – I would love to have played here."
