Wales claim an unconvincing 54-9 victory over Uruguay at the Millennium Stadium and suffer more injury woe

Wales kicked off their Rugby World Cup campaign with an eight-try win over a spirited Uruguay side at the Millennium Stadium in Pool A.

The South Americans made a strong start and some aggressive defence and strong carries saw them force Wales into conceding two penalties early on, which fly-half Felipe Berchesi slotted to put his side 6-0 up.

But Wales eventually settled down after an edgy opening and the Welsh forwards began to dominate their largely amateur opposition.

Samson Lee crashed over before Cory Allen scored a first-half hat trick on his World Cup debut to earn his side a bonus point before half time.

After the break two tries from Gareth Davies and scores from Justin Tipuric and Hallam Amos put Wales beyond reach as they racked up a 54-point haul, with Berchesi responding with a third penalty.

However, Allen, Paul James, Dan Lydiate and Liam Williams all limped from the field to add to Warren Gatland's lengthy list of injuries.
