England managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on Saturday night as they suffered a demoralising 28-25 defeat to Rugby World Cup Pool A rivals Wales at Twickenham.

Despite having the home advantage and a ferocious support behind them, a late Gareth Davies try cancelled out Jonny May's first-half effort to see the scores levelled at 25-25, and set the stage for Wales fly-half Dan Biggar to land a seventh and decisive penalty from 45 metres out.

In fact, it had been a virtuoso performance from both kickers, with Owen Farrell converting six from six from the tee as well as adding a 40-metre drop-goal to take his personal tally to 20 points, with Biggar's 23-point haul proving the difference.

England had the chance to kick at goal in the closing minutes and attempt to slavage a draw after winning a penalty - conceded by Wales captain Sam Warburton - but skipper Chris Robshaw elected to go for the jugular instead and try to win the match with a catch-and-drive in the corner. While the catch came unchallenged, the drive failed and quickly enough the English pack were driven into touch, leaving Wales to clear their lines and celebrate a hugely impressive victory.
