Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Danny Cipriani has lost his place in England's 32-man elite player squad to Jonny Wilkinson.

Cipriani started last season as England's first choice fly-half yet finished it as a substitute for the Saxons at the Churchill Cup.

The 21-year-old Wasps back must settle for a place in the Saxons squad after making way for World Cup winner Wilkinson, who has returned to full fitness.

Wilkinson, who has signed for Toulon, is one of only two French-based players included in either squad with Brive's Riki Flutey the second.

James Haskell, Andy Goode and Jamie Noon are among those who have joined French clubs that have been omitted.

England manager Martin Johnson said: "Our selections include players based in France and Rob Andrew and I have had extensive discussions with the French clubs, who have recruited English players and these have gone well.

"We are looking forward to continuing the positive working relationship with them, which worked so well last season.

"We will continue to monitor the form and fitness of the following players who were involved with England last season with a view to inviting them to training sessions as appropriate - Andy Goode, James Haskell, Tom May, Jamie Noon, Tom Palmer and Steve Thompson."

Goode was heavily involved with England last season, winning seven caps, despite not being included in either squad while Thompson featured on the tour to Argentina.
