From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

THE SOUTH AFRICA captain, Joost van der Westhuizen, will be out for six months after injuring knee ligaments during the World Cup semi- final against Australia on 30 October.

The extent of the injury was revealed only after the Springboks returned home on Tuesday. The 28-year-old scrum-half played in the third-place play-off against the All Blacks, five days after the semi-final.

"I thought I tore it against Australia." Van der Westhuizen said. "There was a lot of discomfort but I decided to play the full game against New Zealand. I'm obviously very disappointed but what can I do?"

Van der Westhuizen underwent surgery yesterday and will spend at least two months resting before the rehabilitation process can begin. He is not expected to return before April.

Another South African, the stand-off Henry Honiball, will make his Bristol debut in Saturday's Allied Dunbar Premiership match at Sale. The veteran, who has retired from Test rugby since the World Cup, will form a half- back pairing with the Argentinian scrum-half Agustin Pichot.
