Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

TOP of the table St Helens warmed up for next Sunday's Lancashire Cup final against Wigan with an impressive 38-8 victory against Hull yesterday.

A Bernard Dwyer penalty put them in front after three minutes and they scored five tries to lead 30-0 at the break. In the second half Hull tightened up their defence, before scoring consolation tries through James Grant and Paul Harrison.

Simon Middleton scored two tries as Castleford overpowered Widnes 26-14. Widnes rarely threatened in the opening half-hour as Castleford built up a

14-point lead, but reduced the arrears to two by half-time with Les Holliday and David Myers tries.

Castleford scored just after the restart and, despite a fight-back, rarely looked like being caught.

Salford got back to winning ways with an improved second-half display at the Willows. Wakefield, without a league win this season, built up an 8-4 lead in the first half. But after the break, Salford raised their game to win 14-8, Phil Ford kicking consistently.

A brilliant late try from Mark Preston gave Halifax 18-13 revenge for last month's Yorkshire Cup defeat by Sheffield. Halifax's Paul Bishop had a 100 per cent record with five kicks out of five.

Hull Kingston Rovers' storming second-half display earned them a 30-1 victory - their first win since the opening game of the season as bottom-of-the-table Leigh failed to take advantage of a favourable first-half wind. In the second half Rovers applied the pressure with Mike Fletcher's kicking backing up a four-try flurry.
