Rugby League: Roe waits for Hull's decision

PETER ROE and the other candidates on the shortlist to become Hull's new coach must wait for the return of the club's chairman from holiday before they learn who is to succeed Royce Simmons.

Roe, who resigned as coach of Keighley last week, is the one man to confirm that his hat is in the ring. Others thought to have support on the Hull board are the Widnes coach, Phil Larder, and Leigh's boss, Steve Simms.

'I expect a decision within seven days, when David Latham comes back off holiday,' said Roe, who previously coached Halifax. 'I'm very tempted by the job, but it would be full-time and it would

involve moving to Humberside, so it is a big decision to make.'

Roe and at least one other contender have attended recent Hull matches as the club's guests. Simmons, the club's third Australian coach in succession, is leaving at the end of this, his second season, because of business commitments in Sydney.

Peter Tunks, who resigned as the coach of Oldham in February, has denied being approached for the

vacant job at Keighley.

Two Great Britain internationals, Barrie-Jon Mather and Kelvin Skerrett, are doubtful for Wigan's match against Halifax tomorrow after picking up injuries in the Easter Monday victory over Warrington that has installed them once more as championship favourites. Mather has a recurrence of a shoulder problem, while Skerrett has a hamstring strain, but Wigan expect to have Gary Connolly back.

Thousands of Leeds fans missed their team's victory over Halifax on Monday when they joined the queue for Challenge Cup final tickets after paying to get into Headingley.
