Rugby League: Doncaster's late tries deny Batley

TWO tries in the last six minutes gave Doncaster a 10-5 win and a place in the First Division yesterday. It rocked Batley, who looked to have won promotion themselves despite being reduced to 12 men shortly after the interval when their 45-year-old substitute Jeff Grayshon was sent off.

Losing 5-0, Doncaster's Brendan Carlyle avoided a tackle and touched down near enough to the posts for Rocky Turner to add the goal and take the lead six minutes from time.

In the final minute Turner snapped up a dropped pass and raced 30 yards unchallenged for the final score.

Workington Town secured the Stones Bitter Second Division championship with a 52-8 win at Bramley that included nine tries. Although Bramley opened the scoring Workington were never in any trouble with the scrum-half Dean Marwood leading the way with 16 points.

St John Ellis beat Castleford's 30- year-old try-scoring record in their 38-24 victory at Wakefield Trinity with his 36th try of the season.
