The underdogs, Oxford, building up to the race on 26 March, found yesterday's trial a real trial. In boats named after two of Genghis Khan's generals, the coxswains of Chepe and Sabutai found themselves out of their depth and floundered tactically as they fought the water and each other. Both crews managed respectable rhythms in a biting head wind, Chepe eventually pulling away to win after Harry Macmillan in Sabutai (above) dropped his oar in rough water.
