Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The first day of Royal Ascot was a successful start to the festival of flat racing for the bookmakers with just one favourite winning, forcing punters to look for value elsewhere in the market on day two.
However, punters will be delighted if clear Magical can deliver for Aidan O'Brien as the favourite for the feature race of the day, the Prince of Wales's Stakes.
We've picked out some other horses you should keep an eye:
2:30 Queen Mary Stakes
Final Song impressed in her winning debut in Ascot on soft ground and could repeat that if the going is similar.
Kimari is another interesting selection, trainer Wesley Ward has a good record in this race, winning two of the last four, and this horse should be considered on her British debut.
It’s a very large field and we’ve seen a lot of competitive races so there’s every chance that there is some good each-way value out there.
3:05 Queen’s Vase
This is a fairly weak race compared to recent years. Aidan O’Brien has four wins from the last six in this race, so take your pick between Norway or Western Australia. Ryan Moore choosing Norway after finishing eighth in the Epsom Derby, a finish that does not quite reflect his performance.
Dashing Willoughby race a good second on his first race of the season then disappointed at Chester on Derby trials, has the potential to do better.
3:40 Prince of Wales’s Stakes
The feature race has been switched from the traditional 4:20 pm slot to the earlier one to accommodate Japanese viewers, who are represented by long shot Deidre.
This is the race of the week and it is hard to see past favourite Magical. She has no question marks next to her name with the form of her life behind her. The weather will not deter her at Ascot and the Aidan O'Brien-trained four-year-old will take some stopping.
Sea Of Class and Crystal Ocean are the closest challengers, Zabeeel Prince could be the big-price surprise.
4:20 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes
Aidan O'Brien's I Can Fly leads the market in this, but it is a very open race. The William Haggas team are in good form, making Move Swiftly or Pretty Baby attractive outsiders. Pretty Baby won on her seasonal re-appearance at Lingfield and has the potential to upset a couple of the market leaders.
5:00 Royal Hunt Cup
Settle For Bay is bidding to become the second horse to win this race in consecutive years in its 176-year history, Master Vote in 1947 and 1948 the first, and there’s a lot of interest in her chances. Things have not gone terribly well since that impressive win 12 months ago. A foot problem ended its season early and she did not perform well in early races this season.
Raising Sand has been carefully prepared for this race after all three of her runs were at Ascot to gear towards this, previously winning here over a mile.
5:35 Windsor Castle Stakes
Take your pick from any of these 23 runners, any of them could do something in the final race of the day.
There are no pointers looking back at the previous races as to who might do well here from a trainer or rider perspective.
Most of these horses have won on debut, have two wins behind them or are improving.
