From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The 2019 Grand National is hurtling ever ever closer.

The most famous race of them all will take place this Saturday as 40 horses battle it out at Aintree. Over £300,000,000 will be wagered on the National alone as punters try and score a winner.

This year’s favourite is Tiger Roll, who will of course be ridden again by Davy Russell as they bid to win the National for the second year in succession.

Elliott has, however, also finalised jockeys for all his contenders as he readies a formidable battalion for Saturday, which is set to break the record for the number of National runners from the same stable.

Before the main event comes Ladies Day – so when is it and what is it all about? Here’s everything you need to know:

When is Ladies Day?

This year Ladies’ Day falls on Friday 5 April.

What is Ladies Day?

Ladies Day is a long-standing tradition at Aintree in which women dress to impress in what has been come more catwalk than sporting event.

There is no official dress code, but women are expected to wear dresses and hats while men wear suits.

Their outfits are judged in an annual Style Award, with the winner receiving a luxury car courtesy of the racecourse.

This year, in excess of 45,000 people are expected to attend what is one of the most popular days on the racing calendar.
