Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

CAB ON TARGET was virtually ruled out of the Cheltenham Gold Cup by Mary Reveley yesterday and will return to hurdling on Saturday.

'I think there is a difference of opinion among his three owners but it would be very much against my advice if he ran in the Gold Cup,' the trainer said. 'A final decision will not be made until after he has run on Saturday,' she added. Mrs Reveley has taken the gelding out of Wetherby's Marston Moor Chase at the five-day stage and aimed him instead at a handicap hurdle on the same card.

Only seven horses are still entered for the Marston Moor, but much interest is likely to surround the reappearances of Gold Cup possibles Hawthorn Blaze, Martin Pipe's choice from five original entries, and Peter Cheesbrough's Blazing Walker.

The latter, now shouldered with top weight of 11st 10lbs, was limited to only two outings last season, including a third place in this race. 'He has been kept off the course by a few little problems but it is nothing serious and he is fit and well now,' Cheesbrough's assistant John Stephenson said.
