RACING: Jackpot pool swells to £1m
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Today's Tote Jackpot at Exeter is expected to swell to around £1.5m - double the previous record pool - after punters were punished by a series of shock results at Stratford yesterday.
The pool of £537,620 carried over from Monday's card at Southwell had grown to £1,127,824 just prior to Stratford's six-race meeting yesterday. Syndicates had moved in with heavy investments in an attempt to collect the prize.
But the first race was won by 14-1 shot Twice The Groom, and the second event went to 25-1 outsider Fred's Delight, ridden by Kazuya Nakatake, a Japanese jockey having his first winner in this country.
By the end of the fourth race, Jackpot units worth only 30p were still in the running. Those too were knocked out when Storm Falcon unseated Jamie Osborne at the fifth fence of the fifth race.
Peter Dow, the Tote's marketing director, said last night: "The best educated guess here is that the pool tomorrow will be between £1.5 and £1.6 million.''
