2.00: Michael Stoute's stable has hit form. MELNIK, who has been competing over 10 furlongs of late, will appreciate the step up in distance and looks well-handicapped.
2.30: A tricky sprint which could see CANTORIS reach the frame at working man's odds. This eight-year-old may finally recapture her old form in what is sure to be a strongly-run race.
3.00: Royal Ballerina, who may well stay 14 furlongs, could lack the speed of some rivals today despite the help of pacemaker Devil's Holiday. Cezanne sparkled when carrying top weight to victory in the Magnet Cup last time, but that handicap form is difficult to evaluate in this company. GLATISANT was touted as a Classic filly last year and can finally go some way towards justifying that assessment. Geoff Wragg has been saying of late that he has her in tip-top shape.
NEWMARKET
3.15: OOZLEM comes to a tortuous contest in the best recent form, as a winner at Brighton this week. He is unpenalised for that victory, which means he should still get the better of the third-placed Anorak.
3.45: The Jotter will earn a footnote as the vehicle for Lester Piggott's return to the racecourse after an enforced absence and has recorded a string of respectable entries in the form book for her placings in Listed company. But this race has tended to be won by lightly-raced fillies, of whom JURAL may be the most promising on show here, judging by her defeat of the subsequent winner Done Well. Michael Stoute has the strongest hand of juvenile fillies and the debutante Opera Lover may not be out of her depth.
4.20: Face North put up another fine handicap performance when runner-up in last week's Golden Mile at Goodwood, but has been put up 5lb since that defeat and Reg Akehurst's inmates do not always follow up successfully in lesser events. BELFRY GREEN has improved this year and, since his defeat of the progressive Dime Time, has been knocked sideways in the Bunbury Cup behind En Attendant and then run fourth over a mile. Today's distance is ideal.
4.50: ALANEES has not been seen since coming home last in the Dewhurst Stakes, which was typical of the company he kept, and was not disgraced in, as a juvenile. Nothing of that calibre takes him on today.
