From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The trainers David Elsworth and Bill Turner were each fined pounds 1,500 by the Jockey Club yesterday after being found guilty of violent and improper conduct. The pair were hauled before the disciplinary committee following two incidents at Epsom in July last year when a long running feud boiled over.

After a six-hour inquiry, the trainers were found to have been in breach of Rule 220 (II). After hearing the judgement Turner said: "I've had 20 years of abuse from him [Elsworth]. He has approached me in the weighing room. How anyone can have the audacity to approach you, start an argument and then report you to the stewards is above me."

Turner said their feud was sparked by an incident when Elsworth was the key figure in Ricky Valance's training operation over 20 years ago.
