Racing: Court hears Cook describe 'split-second' fall

PAUL COOK told the High Court yesterday of the fall from Madraco at Doncaster in 1989 which left him with multiple injuries and ended his career. The former jockey is claiming pounds 280,000 for lost earnings in a case against the course owners, Doncaster Metropolitan Council, which contests liability.

The case hinges on whether Madraco's fall was a normal racing accident or a result of holes in the turf after drainage work. Cook said Madraco had been travelling well when the horse dropped down in front. It was 'a very split-second thing', he added. The case continues today.

Zafonic returned to the racecourse for the first time since winning the 2,000 Guineas in a gallop at Evry yesterday. Ridden by Pat Eddery, Zafonic worked effortlessly over a mile.
