Britain's Chris Law fought off the attentions of the defending French champion, Thierry Peponnet, to earn a tilt at Peter Holmberg, of the US Virgin Islands, in today's semi-finals of the Royal Lymington Cup, writes Stuart Alexander.
Law sailed well and kept control in a biting 13 to 16-knot north-easterly wind and difficult short chop. After Peponnet had scored an emphatic win in the fourth race to draw level in the best-of-five series, Law kept his composure to triumph in the final event. Holmberg, too, had been made to work hard by Australia's Peter Gilmour after he had trailed 0-2.
New Zealand's America's Cup skipper, Russell Coutts, unbeaten all week, had no trouble putting away Denmark's Sten Mohr, 3-0, nor did the world- ranked No 1, Ed Baird, of the US, against Markus Wieser, of Germany. Their clash in the other semi should be a highlight.
