Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Main Event at Santa Pod continues the season's Budweiser series and the first round of the European Top Fuel Dragster Series is the highlight of this weekend's racing. It is nearly five years since a British driver has competed at the top level of drag racing and Andy Carter from High Wycombe has the car, the funding and a dedicated support team to renew interest. Carter will be competing against the leading Europeans, including the Swede Peter Lantz, who is the European champion, in the huge dragsters run on nitro methane, a very expensive fuel which enables these cars to reach 100mph in just under a second. Supporting races includes the petrol- fuelled UK Super Gas Championship, Pro-modified cars and UK IHRA National Bracket Championship for cars and motor- cycles.

How to get there: Santa Pod Raceway, Bedfordshire, is signposted from junction 14 of M1. Weekend ticket: pounds 35 (includes camping). Sunday/Monday: pounds 27. Daily: tomorrow (practice): pounds 10; Sunday (qualifying): pounds 12.50; Monday (finals): pounds 15. Children aged 11 to 16 are half-price, 11 and under free. Racing is from 10am to 6pm each day. (Tel: 01234 782828).
