From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. There aren't many sprinters who can afford to cast a quick glance over their shoulder and smile in the middle of an Olympic 100m semi-final. But then, Usain Bolt is no ordinary sprinter.
And this image of the Jamaican superstar that shows just how far he is of the competition has gone viral as a result.
The photo, taken by Getty photographer Cameron Spencer, shows Bolt looking at those behind him with a smile on his face as he eases to victory.
Bolt then went on to claim his third 100 metre gold medal finishing with a time of 9.81 seconds in the final.
The Jamaican sprinter said he was happy to win the title but expected to go a bit faster.
“With the turnaround time between the semi-final and final we normally have two hours, but we had one hour 20 minutes, it was challenging.”
The 29-year-old began glancing from side to side and smiling at around 60 metres into the semi-final.
And the internet loved it:
Bolt will be hopeful of finishing the Rio Olympic games with nine gold medals, as he competes in the 200 metres and the 4x100 metre relay.
