From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Your support makes all the difference. The favourite to win the men’s 100m breaststroke, Adam Peaty, is looking to become a double Olympic winner at Tokyo 2020 this summer.
Great Britain’s leading light in swimming events will be hoping for multiple medals in Japan, starting with retaining the gold medal he won in Rio five years ago - breaking his own world record along the way.
If that alone wasn’t enough to establish him as the dominant force in the event, he also holds 19 of the 20 fastest-ever times in the 100m breaststroke - he’s the clear front-runner heading into the pool in Japan.
It’s not just in that event he’ll be hoping for glory though and he’s confident of success, saying: “I want to go out there and do what I do. And if I do perform, then I don’t think many people would get close.”
Here’s everything you need to know about when to watch Adam Peaty in action at the 2020 Olympics.
Which events is Peaty competing in?
Adam is potentially set for three events in total, with one of his other specialist events - the 50m breaststroke - not an Olympic event.
As such, he’ll compete in the 100m breaststroke and the men’s 4x100m medley relay, while he is also expected to feature in the new mixed 4x100m medley relay.
When is he competing?
The 100m breaststroke heats start at 11:00am BST on Saturday 24 July. If he progresses to the semi-finals, they are at 2:30am on Sunday 25.
The mixed 4x100m medley relay heats are at 11am on Thursday 29 July, with the men’s 4x100m medley relay heat 24 hours later.
Exact times for which heats Peaty takes part in are still to be confirmed.
When are the medal races?
Should he make it to the finals of each event, Peaty faces competitive action on seven different days.
The men’s 100m breaststroke final is on Monday 26 July at 2:30am - so he’ll hope to have a medal around his neck even before the relay heats get started.
The mixed medley relay final is on Saturday 31 July at 2:30am, with the men’s medley relay final on Sunday 1 August at the same time.
