Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Oscar Pistorius; South Africa

Stunned by his defeat in the 200m final to Alan Oliveira, the South African was back to winning form in the 100m heats last night. He was victorious in the second race with a time of 11.18sec but will have his work cut out to stop Briton Jonnie Peacock in the final tonight.

Jonnie Peacock; Great Britain

The 19-year-old from Cambridge clocked a world record 10.85sec as a guest at the US trials in June and was a class apart in the heats last night. In the loaded opening heat, Peacock finished comfortably clear of Oliveira and Singleton in 11.08sec, equalling the Paralympic record.

Alan Oliveira; Brazil

He might have rocked the world with his 200m win against Pistorius on Sunday but the 20-year-old Brazilian was no match for Peacock in the opening 100m heat last night. A distant third in 11.56sec, Oliveira only made it through to the final as one of the fastest losers

Jerome Singleton; USA

The American who relieved Pistorius of his world championship title at the distance in Christchurch last year could not keep up with Peacock in the heats last night. The one-time NASA research student finished runner up to the Briton in 11.46sec.

Brit watch

Jonathan Fox; Swimming

Known as "Fearless Fox", the 21-year-old aims to make it a golden double in the men's 400m freestyle S7 at 5.46pm. The Beijing silver medallist claimed Britain's first victory in the Aquatics Centre in the 100m backstroke S7 event back on 30 August.

Mark Colbourne; Cycling

The Paralympics debutant goes in search of his fourth medal of the Games after claiming silver in the men's C1 time trial yesterday. The 42-year-old narrowly missed out on gold to Germany's Michael Teuber and the duo will rekindle their rivalry in the men's individual C1-3 road race from 2.30pm

Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell; Sailing

The SKUD18 world champions are currently in third place in the mixed two-person keelboat event, which guarantees them at least a bronze in the final today. They will face competition for gold from the Australian pair Daniel Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch.
