Paralympic Shorts: It's officially the greatest Games ever
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. It's easy to dismiss the suggestion that these are the most successful Paralympics ever as patriotic bluster, but Locog has the figures to prove it. Not only have the 2.7 million tickets sold beaten Beijing by 900,000, but the revenue generated has reached £45m, some £10m more than the expected total. Competitors have enjoyed full crowds, who took advantage of the "highly affordable" ticket prices. The Olympics, meanwhile, raised a mammoth £550m.
C4 misses the moment
Sarah Storey won her 11th Paralympics gold medal today, but you wouldn't have known it watching Channel 4. Though the broadcaster was able to stage an interview with the overjoyed cyclist – whose medal haul now equals that of wheelchair racer Tanni Grey-Thompson – no live coverage of her triumph was offered. Channel 4 said the Olympic Broadcasting Services doesn't provide live coverage from the Brands Hatch venue.
Hard to swallow...
Huge quantities of food are allegedly being thrown away every day. Whistleblowers at caterer Aramark claimed to the BBC they were being ordered to throw away some food immediately after it was cooked. Aramark has denied the allegations.
