CARL PREAN came closer to qualifying for the knockout stage of the table-tennis when he overcame a surprisingly persistent challenge from the local player Roberto Casares by 21-11, 19-21, 21-10.

It was the 16th seeded Briton's second success, following his 21-11, 21-12 success against Baboor Chetan of Indonesia 21- 11, 21-12. He plays against the South Korean Choi Gyung Sop today for a place in the last 16.

Earlier, however, Matthew Sayed put up a magnificent fight against the world champion, Jorgen Persson. The part-time player from Oxford University lost to the Swede only by 21-15, 24-22, which ended his chances of going through.
