THE male gymnasts traditionally produce some of the highest quality sport at the Olympics, and will do so again, judging by the first day of the team competition.

The Unified Team and China put on a mesmerising battle for first place throughout the day. Valeri Belenki gave the Unified Team a tremendous start, coming first in five out of the six events in his compulsory session, and together with the overall world champion, Grigori Misutin, earned the narrowest of leads - 1.150 points after two sessions - over the Chinese.
