JOHN MAJOR yesterday reiterated the Government's backing for Manchester's bid to host the Olympic Games in the year 2000.
On a brief visit to an exhibition on the bid at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the Prime Minister said: 'We want Manchester to win, we want to go for gold, not least because in this competition there are no medals for coming second.
'The venue is Manchester and the bid is national,' he added. 'They have the Government's complete support, no one should have any doubts about it.'
The IOC will announce its choice of venue on 23 September, 1993. Manchester competes with Berlin, Milan, Istanbul, Sydney, Tashkent, Bejing and Brasilia.
