From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

THE Soviet Union dominated in Seoul four years ago, but this year Germany are expected to be the most succcessful nation.

Led by Jens Lehmann in the men's individual pursuit and Jens Fiedler and Bill Huck in the men's sprint competition, the Germans are stronger than ever and only the Italians are likely to challenge their supremacy. The Unified Team's best hope of success is Alexandre Kiritchenko, who is expected to defend successfully his title in the one-kilometre time trial.

The Americans are hoping for their best Olympic performance. Their leading prospect is Rebecca Twigg in the women's individual pursuit. Twigg, who won a silver medal in 1984, retired four years ago, but has made an excellent comeback since resuming training last October.

Chris Boardman, the 1991 British individual pursuit champion from Hoylake, will lead the British track squad's challenge. Boardman, a bronze medallist at the 1986 Commonwealth Games, looks to have a good chance of a medal in the 4,000 metres individual pursuit, in which Colin Sturgess finished fourth for Britain in Seoul.

BRITISH TEAM: Individual pursuit: C Boardman. Points race: S Lillistone. Team pursuit: Boardman, Lillistone, P Jennings, B Steel, G Sword.
