Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Deshaun Watson has donated his first NFL paycheck to three Houston Texans cafeteria staff who are said to have “lost everything” in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
Most would imagine that a rookie quarterback would be happy to splurge $27,000 (£20,000) on new clothes, watches or put it towards a new car, but the 22-year-old decided to give his money to a good cause instead.
“The impact caused by Hurricane Harvey impacted thousands of lives along the Gulf Coast… three NRG Stadium cafeteria employees in particular,” a video released by the Texans explains.
Local media reported that the women - Denisse Benavides, Isabel Sanchez and Maria Rincon - had “lost everything” in the natural disaster which killed 84 people last month.
In the footage (video at top of page), Watson can be seen entering the cafeteria with three envelopes in hand.
"For what you all do for us every day and never complain, I really appreciate you all, so I wanted to give my first game check to y'all to help y'all out in some type of way,” Watson says to the three women. “Here you guys go."
As Watson, who joined the Texans this year as a first round draft pick after graduating from Clemson University, hands the money over, one of the women starts crying and asks if she can give him a hug.
Watson added: "Hopefully that's good and that can get you back on your feet. And anything else y'all need, I'm always here to help."
