Lap 1: Safety car deployed!

Jack de Menezes1 May 2016 13:04

Lap 1: Well, it was chaos as predicted. The Red Bull of Kvyat hit the back of Vettel into turn two, sending the Ferrari into Ricciardo. Behind, Hulkenberg spun out and is out of the race, while Perez has a right-rear puncture. As the field rounds turn four, Vettel has a puncture and spins off and into theoutside wall, and he's out of the race. The safety car is deployed and into the pits comes Kvyat, Ricciardo, Perez and Gutierrez. All this mean Rosberg leads from Raikkonen, who dived beneath Bottas. The Williams' of Bottas and Massa are line astern in third and fourth, and Hamilton is already up to fifth!

Lap 3: Wow. So while Vettel had damage, it appears that Kvyat hit him not only once but twice, and actually spun him into the barrier.Safety Car is in and we're back to racing!

Lap 4: It's a good restart from Rosberg but it's a cracking one for both Bottas and Hamilton. Bottas catches Raikkonen napping and outbrakes him into turn two, with Hamilton replicating the move on Massa to move into fourth. Massa now under pressure from Verstappen, who in turn has Alonso all over him.

Lap 30: Brilliant stuff. Ricciardo passes Magnussen into turn two for eighth, but the Dane fights back and snatches the position in turn five. That allows Grosjean to follow through, and the Haas is up to ninth. Ricciardo pits at the end of the lap, moving Sainz up to tenth.

Lap 34: Do we have a battle on at the front? The gap is down to eight seconds and Hamilton can nearly see the race leader, with 18 laps remaining. Verstappen has a problem and it is his engine - we saw that smoke at the start - and he pulls over at turn two. He parks it well and there won't be a safety car.
