Coronavirus: How has sport been affected?

There will be two F1 grands prix at Silverstone this season, it has been confirmed.

Discussions between Formula One and the British Racing Drivers’ Club have been ongoing for some time as the sport continues to navigate its way out of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2020 season has yet to start, with three races cancelled and seven postponed, but series organisers are planning to get going in July with two races behind closed doors in Austria.

And Silverstone in the UK has emerged as a host of multiple races.

“I am delighted to confirm that Silverstone and Formula 1 have reached an agreement in principle to host two races behind closed doors this summer,” Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle told the BBC.

“However these races will be subject to government approval, as our priority is the safety of all involved and strict compliance with Covid-19 regulations.

“I would like to thank all our fans who have been so supportive throughout this and to assure them we are determined to do all we can to help Formula 1 put on a show this summer.”

An F1 spokesman added: “We are continuing to have conversations with Silverstone and other promoters regarding a revised 2020 calendar.”

Government guidelines that will instruct all international visitors to quarantine for 14 days present a significant problem, however, with organisers hopeful of securing an exemption.

The Belgian Grand Prix, set for August, has become the latest race to get the green light with regional authorities giving the go ahead to a behind-closed-doors weekend on Friday.
