The V8 Supercar meeting at Bathurst in Australia has been overshadowed by two serious crashes in as many days that has left both drivers and a trackside marshal in hospital.

Aussie Racing Car Series driver Damien Flack was airlifted to hospital on Saturday after a shocking accident saw him flip over 10 times before his car burst into flames. Flack, who was turned into a spin by his own brother Adam on the Conrod Straight, was airlifted to hospital where he was reported to have suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung.

The cars were travelling at speeds of up to 230kmh on the Conrod Straight, and Flack’s car can be seen to catch fire once it comes to a rest after flipping over the barrier, having already disintegrated on contact.

The crash came less than 24 hours after another horror accident left V8 Supercars driver Chaz Mostert in hospital as well as injuring three race officials.

Mostert was competing in qualifying for the Bathurst 1000 – one of the highlights of the motor racing calendar – when he hit the wall on the approach to Forrest’s Elbow. After cannoning off another wall, his Ford hit the barrier and took off, sending debris in the direction of the marshals’ post.

Mostert’s car eventually came to a rest towards the bottom of the mountain, and he was immediately airlifted to hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken leg and wrist.

One official was also taken to Orange Base Hospital along with Mostert in a stable condition after suffering a chest injury while two others suffered minor issues, but all three were later cleared of serious injury.

"We can always learn something from what has happened and how to prevent other things happening in the future," V8 Supercars technical director David Stuart said.

Mostert was due to undergo surgery on his leg on Friday, but his Prodrive Racing team confirmed that his operation had been delayed until Saturday due to a “more urgent case” at Orange Base Hospital.
