JOACHIM WINKELHOCK, the defending champion, signalled BMW's return to winning form with emphatic victories in rounds 16 and 17 of the Auto Trader British Touring Car Championships at Brands Hatch yesterday.
But while race honours went to the German team, Gabriele Tarquini strengthened his claim to the drivers' title with a pair of second places for his Alfa Romeo team.
Tarquini won all four races previously contested at Brands Hatch this year but the same mid-season rule changes which boosted BMW's performance slowed the Italian cars.
