From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

LOTUS yesterday introduced their new grand prix car and claimed that Johnny Herbert will make a major impact this season.

Peter Collins, the managing director of Team Lotus, looked on at the launch in London as Herbert, the 28-year-old Englishman, and his other driver, Alessandro Zanardi, the 26-year-old Italian, took the wraps off the Ford-powered 107B, which will carry their hopes in the world championship, beginning a fortnight on Sunday.

Herbert was introduced by Collins to Formula One with Benetton four years ago. 'Johnny has incredible grit and determination, just as Nigel Mansell had,' Collins said.

'The talent is out there but the problem for Johnny and others is getting the right cars. Michael Schumacher has shown there can be new stars, and Johnny will do the same. We've still not seen the best of Johnny. I think we might this year.'

Herbert, for one, is confident his new car, with fully active suspension, will provide him with the chance to demonstrate his ability.

'The new car is much quicker than the old one,' Herbert said. 'I think we can make the podium consistently and pop in a win.'
