MARTIN BRUNDLE drove five timed laps in the new McLaren-Peugeot at Silverstone yesterday, the start of what he hopes will be a lasting relationship with the team, writes Derick Allsop.
The driver's link with McLaren, revealed in later editions of yesterday's The Independent, appears to confirm his emergence as the leading contender for the third place in the squad. Mika Hakkinen has signed and Alain Prost is expected to test at Estoril next week.
While McLaren wish to play down Brundle's involvement, he is due to run the MP4/9 again today and may stay on at the British Grand Prix circuit for a third day. Brundle is prepared to gamble on earning or inheriting a regular drive.
