Rallying

Colin McRae, the British world champion, suffered chronic suspension problems with his Subaru Impreza as he finished the Safari Rally in Kenya in fourth position yesterday, more than an hour behind the winner, Tommi Makinen.

The Finn won the world championship's roughest and fastest rally to extend his lead in the second round of the series to 17 points.

McRae, who hit a 12-year-old spectator on Saturday's stages, said: "It's not very enjoyable fighting for world championship points in conditions like this."
