Brian Lara transformed the third one-day international between West Indies and New Zealand with his eighth limited-overs international century in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad yesterday.
Lara delighted his home crowd with an undefeated 146 from 131 balls as West Indies eventually cruised to victory by five wickets with 4.2 overs to spare. They now lead the five-match series 2-1.
Lara came to the wicket after West Indies had lost Stuart Williams and Shivnarine Chanderpaul with just six runs on the board and he added 110 with Phil Simmons (47) for the third wicket and an unbroken 117 for the fourth wicket with Jimmy Adams (24no) to take their team to an ultimately untroubled victory.
Simmons and Lara took charge with some excellent stroke play which had Lee Germon, the New Zealand captain, regularly switching his bowlers in a vain effort to stem the onslaught.
None seemed to have any answer to the pair. Lara raced to his second 50 in just 50 balls, bringing up his hundred with a lofted drive over midwicket off Chris Cairns into the stand. He finished the match by hitting Gavin Larsen over square leg for another six.
Apart from two partnerships, the first from second-wicket pair Roger Twose (48) and Nathan Astle (43) which yielded 96 and the other between Adam Parore (33) and Cairns (38) for the fifth wicket which accounted for 65, New Zealand were always struggling against the West Indies bowlers.
THIRD ONE-DAY INTERNATIONAL (Port of Spain, Trin): New Zealand 219 for 8 in 50 overs; West Indies 225 for 3 in 45.4 overs (B C Lara 146no). West Indies won by seven wickets and lead five-match series 2-1.
