From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Kevin Keegan has shed light on his last days as Newcastle manager with the revelation that he was told that he would have to raise pounds 6m by selling players.

"We had to get money back in after we bought Alan Shearer," he said in a television interview in South Africa. "This has not been said before, but I had to sell players. I had to raise pounds 6m to get the bank off the club's back before the [Stock Market] flotation. That didn't quite work because people never come in for the players you want."

Keegan's replacement as manager, Kenny Dalglish, is trying to recruit three new players, while at the same time preparing to sell Robert Lee to West Ham.

The Georgian international Temur Ketsbaia, Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson and Scotland Under-21 midfielder Ricky Gillies are the trio in question. The Georgian, who plays for AEK Athens, is close to agreeing a deal, while Tomasson, who has been made an improved offer by his Dutch club Heerenveen, is also a rumoured target for Ajax and Barcelona.

Gillies, the St Mirren midfielder, is travelling to Newcastle for transfer talks after spending a week training with Liverpool, who had looked set to sign him for pounds 500,000. The 31-year-old Lee is thought to want to move back to his native London, and West Ham are willing to pay the pounds 2m asking price.

Chelsea have been warned by the Football Association that they are not allowed to sell FA Cup final tickets as part of corporate hospitality packages. The London club play Middlesbrough in the final at Wembley on 17 May and have offered a package including a Cup final ticket for pounds 496 per person plus VAT.

n England striker Kelly Smith scored twice and set up a third goal as Arsenal beat Liverpool 3-0 at Highbury to clinch the Women's Premier League title for the third time.
