Italian Football: Platt's return ends in defeat
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The England midfielder, recovered from a knee operation, was withdrawn with quarter of an hour to go, but showed he should be fit for the World Cup qualifier against San Marino on Wednesday week.
His international team-mate, Paul Gascoigne, upset at being substituted in his last few games, not only lasted the distance but set up Diego Fuser for Lazio's second in a 2-0 victory over Fiorentina. Gascoigne was included at the expense of Thomas Doll, one of Lazio's four foreigners.
Milan showed why just they have six of those, as in the absence of Gullit and Van Basten, two of their imports rarely assured of starting both scored. Montenegrin Dejan Savicevic was first and then Frenchman Jean-Pierre Papin struck twice as light work was made of beating bottom-club Pescara. The victory stretched Milan's lead to nine points as Internazionale drew 0-0 at Cagliari.
Genoa, third from bottom, are having an even more miserable season than Liverpool, who they knocked out of the Uefa Cup last season before reaching the semi- final. They lost 3-0 at Roma.
