THE reason for having the weekend off ahead of England matches was put into sharp focus yesterday, when injuries left Terry Venables facing a rethink of his line-up to play Portugal at Wembley on Tuesday. He has lost two midfielders, David Platt and Robert Lee, and Teddy Sheringham is very doubtful.

Platt is ruled out by a hamstring injury, even though he played the full 90 minutes of Arsenal's draw at Southampton. Sheringham also stayed on after scoring Tottenham's early winner against Queen's Park Rangers, but he has a back problem and was put in traction after the game. Robert Lee aggravated a thigh injury during Newcastle's defeat at Chelsea.
