Glenn Hoddle, pleased with England's display, said: "The main thing was we got three points and have started the group off the right way. That will put pressure on all the other teams who have to come here.

"The good thing was that we showed we had a cutting edge in the last third of the pitch. We got in six or seven times and looked like scoring everyone of them, that's a major plus for us."

Hoddle, refusing to be drawn on his predecessor Terry Venables's derision of his thinking as "out of date", added: "That's just an opinion. Football's about opinions."

England captain, Alan Shearer, said: "It's a great feeling. And to score as well, and leading us to victory in my first game and the manager's first game is just what we wanted. The pitch was diabolical, and I was denied what I thought was a blatant penalty as well as missing one when I should have scored even though there was bobble."
