Hockey: Students are bowled over by Woods
English Universities. . .2
Hockey Association. . . .3
THREE goals in a five-minute burst just before the interval were enough to see a strong Hockey Association side, including three full internationals, to a win in their annual fixture against the English Universities who, with many of their established players injured or not available, were very much below full strength at Milton Keynes yesterday.
The students started brightly with John Bell and Chris Keevil looking dangerous and it was no surprise when Bell turned Stephen Wood at the top of the circle to slam the ball past the goalkeeper, Jon Clark.
The students' confidence swelled after this early goal and they went at the HA's shaky defence with renewed vigour. The HA had their chances, notably from three penalty corners, but it was not until the goalkeeper, Mark Bacthelor, floored Jimmy Henderson in the 27th minute that the HA equalised, through a Calum Giles penalty.
Three minutes later Duncan Woods, with a fierce shot, put the HA ahead; Giles, a minute later, made it 3-1. The students pulled a goal back in the 63rd minute, however, through Simon Organ.
