Jane Swinnerton-Ions scored a 26th-minute goal to give Staffordshire a 1-0 win over the defending champions, Lancashire, in the pool stages of the Women's County Championship finals at Prescot yesterday to head Pool A, writes Brian Tatlock. Earlier, Lancashire had beaten Hertfordshire 6-0, with Martine Brown scoring four times and their coach Maggie Souyave twice, while Staffordshire had goals from Stella Buxton and Jenny Cordon to beat the West Country 2-0.
