This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

RINGA HUSTLE became the first dog to wear the white jacket of trap three to victory in the Greyhound Derby Final since the race moved to Wimbledon in 1985 when showing blistering early pace in the pounds 40,000 event on Saturday night, writes Matt Chapman. The Tony Meek-trained, 5-2 second favourite beat the 7-1 chance Sullane Castle (trap one) by 2 1/4 lengths in a time of 28.62sec. Greenane Squire, the 15-8 favourite, finished fourth.
