Peter Allis caused something of a stir last night when he suggested that Paul Dunne, the amateur threatening to upset the odds and triumph in The Open, might like "older women".

The BBC commentator made the quip as Dunne left the St Andrews course after his incredible third round. The 22-year-old from Ireland carded a 66 on the Old Course to give himself a share of the lead along with Kouis Oosthuizen and Jason Day on -12.

As he walked off, he was filmed hugging his mother when Allis joked: "Ah, that must be mum.

"Perhaps he likes older women. I don't know but I hope I got the right one."

Dunne is in the final pairing for today's delayed fourth round.
