The former world No 1 hasn’t enjoyed the best of weekends at Royal Troon and finds himself on level par heading into the final day after carding a two-over round of 73. It leaves him 11 shots behind leader Phil Mickelson, and any hope of winning The Open for a second time look to be over.
That frustration boiled over on 16, and after hitting his second shot on the par-five 554-yard ‘Well’, McIlroy launched his wood into the ground in anger, only to see the head snap clean off and fly off into the distance.

It capped a pretty miserable day for McIlroy, in which he was two-over after three holes, and despite a birdie on the fourth he immediately gave another shot away at the fifth before making ground up at six.
He went on to drop another shot on the back nine at 15, and rounded out his day by leaving the Ayrshire links course one club less than he started the day with.
