Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Ulsterman Darren Clarke had to be content with second place after South African Nic Henning held off his challenge to win the Vodacom Players Championships at Royal Cape Golf Club in Cape Town today.

The 30-year-old Johannesburg-born Henning, who led for most of the competition, ended tied with Clarke on 12 under par.

He finally won after sinking a putt of just over a metre on the second play-off hole at the 18th.

"After losing my European Tour Card, this is something special and fantastic," said Henning, after his first win as a professional.

Henning, whose father and three uncles were professional golfers, had been struggling with back problems for years, but after major surgery appeared to be swinging as well as ever.

Scottish-born Alan McLean finished third on 11 under.

Tournament favourite Ernie Els finished in fourth place with Jonathon Hobday, David Frost and Tony Johnstone on 10 under par.
