From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

SEVE BALLESTEROS, with only two tournaments remaining to complete the 1994 European PGA Tour, has still not given up hope of overtaking Colin Montgomerie in the race for the No 1 spot in the Volvo Order of Merit.

Ballesteros, in second place in the table with pounds 454,848 to his credit, is pounds 148,000 behind Montgomerie, but he said yesterday: 'I want to give Colin a little bit of trouble. I want to make him sweat.'

Montgomerie is not playing in this week's first ever Chemapol Czech Open at the Marienbad Golf Club and Ballesteros said: 'I think I will have to finish first or second here this week and first at the Volvo Masters in Spain next week to go to No 1.

'But first here and first next week would be even better. I'm playing well so it's possible.'

This week, his biggest problem may be the weather, for both Tuesday and yesterday the course was not playable until after 10:30am because of heavy frost.
