Golf: Faldo is matched by drive of Lane
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Lane and Faldo are tied on 136, six under par, with Ian Woosnam on five under and three others, Sandy Lyle, Tony Charnley and the Australian, Peter Senior, two shots further back on a superb course that has brought out the weaknesses of many players on the circuit.
Lane, having shot two successive 68s, said: 'It's a joy to wake up in the morning, knowing you are going to play this golf course.'
He is looking forward to partnering Faldo, adding: 'He doesn't say very much but you can learn so much from playing with him.'
Yesterday Lane shot six birdies and three bogeys. At the 390-yard 14th he almost holed out for a two, striking a sand-iron to within six inches.
Faldo had an unspectacular, level-par first nine of 34 but came home with five birdies in the last seven holes and is in sight of his fifth European title of the season.
He has to finish only in the top 49 to pass Ian Woosnam's record official earnings of pounds 574,166 in one season, which the Welshman set in 1990.
Faldo, however, has no thoughts of money. 'I shall be happy if I keep playing as well as I am,' he said. 'I've played well and been relaxed all year ever since I was given this book Being Happy written by some Australian.'
Woosnam, who sank only one putt of more than three feet in his 70 yesterday, complained that the greens were too spongy for the late finishers but says that Faldo can be beaten.
Woosnam said: 'You know Nick will play well for the next two days and you have to play aggressively and well to beat him. But he is beatable. I'm playing well but I need a few putts to drop.'
