Wigan face an anxious wait to discover if they are set to lose their England scrum-half, Matty Smith, to suspension.

The former St Helens playmaker appeared to kick Widnes full-back Rhys Hanbury as he celebrated his side’s late try in a 22-22 draw with the Warriors on Super League’s opening night.

Smith was sin-binned by referee James Child following the incident, which will be scrutinised by the Rugby Football League’s match-review panel on Monday.

If Smith is charged, he would face a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, just 11 days before the Warriors take on Brisbane Broncos as part of the World Club Series.

Widnes winger Patrick Ah Van looks certain to be charged after being sent off for a high tackle on Wigan’s England winger Josh Charnley in the first half.

Warrington have included their three newcomers, Daryl Clark, Ashton Sims and Gary Wheeler, in their 19-man squad to face Salford today, but they are without forwards Anthony England and Simon Grix because of injury. Full-back Matty Russell also sits out the opening game with dental problems but winger Kevin Penny is set to make his first Super League appearance for nine months.

Salford have new boys Ben Jones-Bishop, Michael Dobson, Weller Hauraki, Scott Taylor and Cory Paterson all set to make their debuts in a much-changed team. Centre Junior Sa’u is the Red Devils’ only injury absentee.

Castleford could give Jordan Tansey a start in the absence of injured full-back Luke Dorn against Wakefield.

Hull KR coach Chris Chester has named all but one of his 13 close-season signings in his 19-man squad to face Leeds, including former Leeds prop Ryan Bailey, back from an Achilles injury. Hooker John Boudebza is the one new face to miss out.
